We don’t often think of poetry analysis as being a multimedia endeavor, but Mrs. A’s grade four class has proven us wrong. Using iPads and the app Explain Everything, even young students can now share their poetry analysis process in a new way.
Not only did the students do traditional poetry analysis tasks of marking literary strategies such as metaphor, simile, rhyme scheme, and more; they drew pictures which gave their audience actual illustrations of sensory words. They also narrated their entire journal so that their audience can hear their passion for poetry.
Poetry was meant to be read and celebrated, but classrooms traditionally make poetry an isolated paper and pencil endeavor. By creating these multimedia poetry analysis journals, the students of Mrs. A’s class have breathed new life into poetry and are able to demonstrate to their audience their insights into poetry.
